Casual English Language Teacher

Macquarie University English Language Centre was established more than 25 years ago to prepare international students for university study. Our English Language Programs include Direct Entry University Preparation, Academic English, General English and Study Tours, all delivered by experienced teachers through our robust, bespoke curriculum.

Beyond the classroom, our overall student experience is enhanced by carefully planned community-focussed activities and backed by strong academic and welfare support. Teacher development is highly valued and consistently available through MQ ELC’s in-house professional development program, and the centre is enriched by its strong presence and active participation in national and international TESOL industry associations such as English Australia and IATEFL.

Opportunities currently exist at MQ ELC for qualified and experienced Casual Teachers to teach 2-5 days per week across the range of our English Language Programs. Successful candidates are expected to be timetabled to teach in one or more 5-week block/s between 9 October 2017 and 2 February 2018.

Essential Criteria:

  • Undergraduate degree
  • Postgraduate TESOL qualification
  • A passion for working with international students and assisting them to successfully achieve their academic goals and enhance their social participation
  • Thorough knowledge of the English language system and of the most current research in second language acquisition and best-practice pedagogical approaches
  • A willingness to embrace and adhere to a principled eclectic approach to Communicative Language Teaching
  • Thorough knowledge of the spoken and written genres required of students for successful university participation
  • Appreciation of a supportive team culture and ability to work collegially
  • Fine-tuned intercultural awareness and sensitivity
  • Understanding of eLearning and confidence with classroom technology and online learning platforms such as Moodle
  • Experience with high-stakes courses and assessment processes, and ability to adapt according to the assessment needs of the course and the learning needs of the students
  • Experience in teaching on general/academic English language courses and/or field-specific university preparation programs

Desirable criteria:

  • Understanding of IELTS or other English language testing systems
  • Experience working in other fields such as business, accounting, science etc.
  • Experience in the development and/or implementation of curriculum or e-learning materials

Group and individual interviews are scheduled on selected days between Mon 7 Aug – Fri 11 Aug, and if required, one more group interview may be scheduled in the week of Mon 14 Aug.

Interview sessions will take place either in the morning (9:00am – 12.00pm approx.) or in the afternoon (12:30 – 3:30pm approx.). Shortlisted candidates will be required to attend one interview session and will be given a range of selected days and session times to choose from. Shortlisted candidates must attend the interview at their chosen time and for the DURATION of the session.

Selection criteria
Qualifications (essential)
