NEAS CEO, Patrick Pheasant was pleased to recently chair a discussion panel at the second annual TEQSA conference at the Grand Hyatt in Melbourne from 29 November – 1 December 2017. The topic of the discussion panel was Achieving Quality and Success as an International Student. The panel consisted of a range of experts in international education, exploring how we can achieve quality and success from the student perspective. It was great to have an opportunity to explore with the panel what issues are important to international students studying at higher education institutions in Australia.
The panel consisted of Professor Sophie Arkoudis, Associate Director of the Melbourne Centre for Higher Education, Brett Blacker, CEO of English Australia, Bijay Sapkota, President of the Council of International Students Australia and Professor Chris Ziguras, President of International Education Association of Australia.
From NEAS’ perspective as a quality assurance specialist in English language teaching, we see the same issues being repeated across the higher education sector and believe events like this conference help provide organisations with great ideas on how to improve the international student experience. Many organisations approach international students from a deficit model and this panel brainstormed ways to support international students in measuring and defining success from a positive and proactive perspective. The successful conference brought together Australia’s education sectors for an open discussion and allowed attendees to collaborate, connect and discuss ideas on improving quality.
