QUALITY LEARNING SERIES – 2018

Throughout 2018, NEAS will offer 40 workshops across Australia for teachers and professionals as part of the Quality Learning Series (QLS). This year will see the release of nine new workshops aligned with the NEAS Quality Assurance Framework, providing high quality professional development for ELT teachers and professional staff across all sectors (independant ELICOS, VET, AMEP, high school and higher education). An additional four workshops will be delivered online as MOOCs, covering diverse areas such as Strategy, Risk Management and Governance, Assessing Against Learning Outcomes and Enhancing the Student Experience.

The NEAS Quality Learning Series provides valuable professional development and guidance for more than 750 participants Australia-wide every year. Workshops are normally three  hours in length and are conducted at our member centre locations in Cairns, Brisbane, Sydney, Perth, Adelaide and Melbourne.

These half and full-day seminars will assist education professionals in their efforts to balance regulation with creativity.

Aligned with NEAS Quality Assurance Framework D: Administration, Management and Staffing, this online course explores a number of approaches business owners and managers in International Education and Training can take to ensure their Centres maintain quality, and are prepared for any eventuality.

This online course will cover such concepts as good governance, risk management, and quality assurance. Participants are also invited to network and share their experiences in managing an ELT centre.

This workshop is open to all professional staff and teachers who aspire to management positions.

Learning outcomes are the foundation of quality syllabus and valid assessment. They provide guidance for teachers in selecting and/or creating resources and materials to enable their students to achieve course outcomes. They also provide a handy checklist to ensure that assessment tools assess what the course aims to teach.

Whether teachers are using assessment tools from their core texts or sample tests in test preparation textbooks, it is essential to determine the degree to which these tools or tests relate to the course syllabus. Mapping an assessment tool against learning outcomes enables the teacher to determine whether it needs to be abandoned or adapted to meet the needs of the syllabus.

This session gives participants the opportunity to work with commercially available assessments to develop skills in adapting assessment tools for use within their centre. These skills are equally applicable in contexts where centres create their own assessments and/or wish to adapt their current assessment bank for different courses.

This course contains new features that are different to the 2017 version of the course such as:

  • Interactive quizzes with instant feedback
  • Interactive activities for quality principle G 1-6 and drivers
  • Badges awarded for each completed Module
  • Discussion Forums for sharing of task ideas with other NEAS members
  • Chat function for real time communication

Quality ELT Centres provide quality teaching but do students always feel that they have had a quality experience during their period of enrolment? In the hustle and bustle of day to day teaching and management, the importance of the students’ broader experience in the language centre and beyond can be overlooked.

Helping students have a positive experience while they are enrolled with you need not be a costly exercise. There are various simple and inexpensive strategies you can implement to improve the student experience, if you know what your students need and/or are likely to value. Many providers, however, are not engaging their stakeholders effectively to access this information.

In this session, participants will explore the principles and features of systems designed to collect robust feedback that can help them add value to the student experience. They will then workshop a number of ideas that they may be able to take back to their own centres and start implementing without having to spend too much time or money.

Participants will be provided with the knowledge, tools and strategies to evaluate and design effective assessment instruments.

This course contains new features that are different to the 2017 version of the course such as:
